[Textiles] This work denim is a reproduction of Levis' 1950s DENIM FAMILY, made from 100% West Indian Sea Island Cotton. The yarn structureis faithfully reproduced through repeated trial spinning to recreate the uneven texture of the spinning machines used in the 1950s when DENIM FAMILY was produced. The warp and weft are custom-made 7/- and 14/- yarns, respectively. The warp is dyed using a100% pure indigo synthetic dye, unadulterated, using a rope dyeing machine to recreate the original light, blue-toned hue. Whileearly 20th-century light-weight denim typically uses TOP yarn (a grayish color created at the cotton stage and used for weaving) for the weft, the weft of 1950s Levi's denimwas dyed gray with sulfur dye, as the weft was quite uniformly dyed even under an electron microscope, suggesting it was likely not TOP yarn. Theweaveis tightly woven using an old-fashioned power loom with a 2/1 weave and a density of threads based on an analysis of the DENIM FAMILY fabric. The fabricis finished with a pre-shrunk shrink-proofing process that does not cause singeing. It will not shrink more than 3%.
